Carelon clinical appropriateness guidelines are developed using a robust evidentiary review process. A team of clinicians and medical librarians conduct literature review using structured search methodologies. The collected evidence is then validated using assessment methods such as ADAPTE, AGREE II, and GRADE/QUADAS, which measure the validity and utility of the evidence gathered. The evidence and assessments are synthesized and used to inform the development of clinical guideline criteria. In 2020 over 12,000 articles and guidelines were gathered and assessed by the Carelon Knowledge Services team.
High quality evidence is at the heart of the programs and solutions that Carelon offers. In addition to a rigorous process for collecting and assessing the medical literature, Carelon guidelines undergo two levels of review by independent groups of physicians representing a broad range of clinical practice and expertise.
